Today a question came to my mind what must have motivated man to make movies? The answer is quite simple. Movies are one of the best ways to spread your message to masses and the creative mind of man has always been hungry to invent something new and this gave a sense of accomplishment. Last week I saw a movie that made me think, how different we all are in some aspects of our life. Many times we do what we don’t want to do? Many of us chose to be driven by external factors. By external factors I mean external environment that may include from our friends to all materialistic things whose presence and absence drives one’s state of mind.

The movie “The Shawshank Redemption,” I think is a wonderful piece of art. The movie, in a subtle way, talks about some of the basic characteristics of life that you must have heard from your well wisher. They are:

1. Hope and Patience: Some day my dream would come true and I would get what I want, but till then I have to wait because things don’t happen overnight. Andrew, the main character in this movie waits for a period of 20 years to get his freedom. If he had no hope, he faced such incidences during his life at prison that he would have committed suicide in very early period of his life at prison. Today, we in some situations don’t even wait for a single day for things to happen.

2. Some work everyday to reach your goal: Andrew dug a tunnel through his cell that allows him to escape. Every day he used to dug the some part of the tunnel. Finally, after a period of 20 years, the tunnel gets completed and Andrew was able to escape from the prison. This teaches us that we should know what is our goal and what we need to do every day, that would bring us a step closer to our goal. Whatever may be the goal, you have to plan out every day, what is it you are going to do today to move close to your goal.

3. Life has its own colours: In everyone’s life, problems are there and every single individual feels that his/her problem is the biggest in the world. Life is not fair every time. Andrew undergoes an imprisonment for two decades for the crime which he had never committed. He faces sexual assault at the prison, instead of complaining for what happened had in his life. He took the life as it was. All the people who cheated Andrew or took undue benefit of his liberty, faced serious consequences in their lives.

4. Expect the unexpected: Brooks, a prisoner at Shawshank, is released on parole after five decades of his life at prison. In prison he is an educated person who handles the Library but to the outside world he is an old man, of little use. He becomes so used to the life at Prison that he is not able to adjust himself to the outside world and at last he hangs himself out of frustration. So always be ready for surprises in life. It is you who need to outsmart the unfavorable situations, that would make you the winner and not the vice-versa.
